In one of the worst tragedies involving Indian Umrah pilgrims, 42 people from Telangana, most of them from Hyderabad, were killed when their bus collided with a diesel tanker and caught fire on the Mecca–Medina highway near Mufrihat in Saudi Arabia. The accident occurred around 1:30 am IST on Monday while the group was travelling from Mecca after completing Umrah rituals. Of the 43 passengers on board, only one survivor is currently receiving treatment in a local hospital.
Eyewitness accounts and early investigations suggest that the bus burst into flames almost immediately after the collision, leaving passengers with almost no time to react. Many of them were reportedly asleep when the tanker slammed into the vehicle. Rescue teams arrived to find the bus engulfed in fire, with the intense blaze complicating recovery and identification procedures.
Authorities confirmed that among the dead were 20 women and 11 children. Most passengers were part of a privately arranged tour group that left Hyderabad on November 9. Families across the city woke up to the shocking news and rushed to travel agencies and local offices to verify the names of their loved ones.

Senior officials have been instructed to stay in constant touch with Saudi authorities, Indian missions in Riyadh and Jeddah and the travel operators involved.
Teams at the Secretariat are gathering passenger documentation, confirming identities, assisting with passport and repatriation formalities and supporting relatives who are waiting for official confirmation.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi expressed deep grief over the tragedy and told reporters that he immediately contacted two Hyderabad-based travel agencies associated with the pilgrims. He collected the passenger lists and shared them with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh to speed up verification.
Owaisi also spoke with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy, who informed him that Saudi authorities were compiling detailed reports and would update Indian officials shortly. Owaisi has urged the government to ensure immediate repatriation and full assistance to the families.
PM Modi and EAM Jaishankar Offer Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted an emotional message on X saying he was “deeply saddened by the accident in Medinah involving Indian nationals”. He added that his thoughts were with the bereaved families and that the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah were providing “all possible assistance”.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also shared a statement on X, writing, “Deeply shocked at the accident involving Indian nationals in Medinah, Saudi Arabia. Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are giving fullest support to Indian nationals and families affected by this accident. Sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”
Both leaders assured that the government would monitor the situation closely until every family receives closure and the lone survivor receives full medical care.
Investigation Underway Into Cause of Collision
Saudi authorities have launched a detailed investigation into what caused the crash. Key points under examination include the speed of both vehicles, condition of the diesel tanker, mechanical status of the bus, driver fatigue and road visibility at the time of the incident. Footage circulating online shows the bus completely engulfed in flames within minutes, suggesting the tanker explosion accelerated the fire.
Officials are reviewing CCTV footage, witness testimony and forensic evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events.
A State and a Nation in Mourning
As families in Hyderabad brace for confirmation and repatriation of the victims, the tragedy has plunged Telangana and the nation into collective mourning. Local community organizations have opened support desks, while state officials remain in continuous communication with Indian missions abroad.
With 42 confirmed deaths, including women and children on a pilgrimage of faith, the tragedy stands as a stark reminder of the risks on heavily trafficked pilgrimage routes in the region.
The Indian government has reiterated that every possible effort will be made to bring the bodies home swiftly and support the devastated families through the painful process ahead.
