The alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district has sparked widespread outrage, violent protests and a political confrontation, with police arresting three people and constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. The incident has reignited concerns over crimes against children and law and order in the state, drawing national attention as the investigation gathers pace.

Girl Found Dead After Going Missing
According to investigators, the 11-year-old girl left her home on Saturday evening to buy a birthday gift for a friend but never returned. After searching for her, family members informed the police, who launched an investigation into her disappearance.
Hours later, the girl’s body was recovered from a pond near her home in Baruipur. Police subsequently registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Investigators later secured CCTV footage that reportedly shows the girl walking with one of the accused shortly before she disappeared. Police believe the footage could prove crucial in reconstructing her final movements.
The preliminary post-mortem examination revealed severe injuries. According to investigators, the report indicated that the girl suffered multiple bite marks and serious head injuries caused by a heavy object. Officials also said the findings suggested she was still alive when she was allegedly thrown into the pond, making the forensic examination a key component of the ongoing investigation.
Three Arrested, SIT Takes Charge
Police initially detained several individuals before arresting the prime accused. Two more suspects were subsequently arrested, taking the total number of arrests in the case to three.
To ensure a comprehensive investigation, West Bengal Police constituted a Special Investigation Team comprising senior officers. The SIT is examining forensic evidence, CCTV footage, witness statements and electronic records to establish the sequence of events leading to the girl’s death.

During the unrest, an angry mob allegedly beat a local man to death after suspecting him of involvement in the crime. Following the violence, authorities deployed additional police forces across Baruipur to restore normalcy and prevent further unrest. Officials have appealed to residents not to circulate unverified information that could inflame tensions.
Political Row Deepens
The case has quickly escalated into a political flashpoint in West Bengal.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the lynching may have had a communal dimension and called for a thorough investigation into both the murder and the subsequent mob violence.
“There may be a communal angle behind the lynching, and the matter should be investigated thoroughly,” Adhikari said.
The ruling Trinamool Congress rejected attempts to communalise the incident and maintained that the investigation should be allowed to proceed on the basis of evidence. The party accused the opposition of making premature allegations before the completion of the police probe.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the crime and assured the victim’s family that the government would pursue the strictest legal action against those found guilty.
“We will seek capital punishment for the culprits,” the Chief Minister said, while reiterating that the state administration would ensure a speedy investigation and prosecution.
The political exchanges have continued as police work to establish the facts surrounding both the alleged rape and murder and the violence that followed.
