Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oslo on Monday for a historic diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening India’s partnership with Norway in areas including trade, renewable energy, maritime cooperation, technology and global security. The visit marks the first bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in more than 43 years and comes at a time when India is expanding its strategic engagement with Europe and the Nordic region amid growing geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty and shifting global supply chains.

Modi was welcomed at the airport by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre before the two leaders held high-level talks focused on clean energy partnerships, investment opportunities, climate cooperation and regional security issues. The visit also includes Modi’s participation in the third India-Nordic Summit, where leaders from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland are expected to discuss sustainability, innovation, digital infrastructure and resilient supply chains.

Modi and Norway Push Stronger Strategic Ties

Modi’s Norway visit is being viewed as a significant step in strengthening India’s engagement with Nordic nations at a time when European countries are seeking deeper partnerships with fast-growing economies and stable geopolitical allies. Norway has emerged as an important partner for India because of its expertise in renewable energy, maritime technology, sustainable infrastructure and green industrial development.

Soon after arriving in Oslo, Modi highlighted the significance of the visit. “I have landed in Oslo, Norway. I am grateful for the warm welcome from Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at the airport. This is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Norway in over 40 years. I am confident that the visit will strengthen the friendship between India and Norway,” he said.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also emphasised the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation with India. “India is a key international actor and an important partner for Norway in trade, green transition, technology and multilateral cooperation,” Støre said ahead of delegation-level discussions.

During the visit, Modi was also conferred with the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, one of Norway’s highest civilian honours. The recognition is being seen as a major diplomatic moment in India-Norway relations and adds to a growing list of international honours received by the Indian Prime Minister during his tenure.

Reacting to the award, BJP leaders described the honour as recognition of Modi’s expanding diplomatic influence and India’s rising global profile. “The 32nd international award marks the expanse of PM Modi Ji’s leadership, from the south of the globe to its north, spreading the message of peace and cooperation and bolstering India’s diplomatic leverage among nations,” party leaders said after the announcement.

Officials said the talks between Modi and Støre focused on renewable energy partnerships, maritime cooperation, technology collaboration and expanding economic engagement between India and Norway.

Energy and Security Talks Dominate Oslo Meeting

Energy security emerged as one of the central themes during the India-Norway talks as governments worldwide continue to deal with instability in global fuel markets caused by conflicts in Europe and West Asia. Both countries discussed long-term cooperation in liquefied petroleum gas supply, offshore wind projects, hydrogen fuel technology and sustainable shipping infrastructure.

Norway is one of Europe’s major energy producers and a global leader in green transition technologies, including carbon capture systems and carbon neutral shipping solutions. India, meanwhile, has become one of the world’s fastest growing renewable energy markets and is seeking stronger international partnerships to support its climate and industrial goals.

The two countries elevated bilateral relations into a Green Strategic Partnership aimed at expanding cooperation in renewable energy, climate financing, sustainable urban development, carbon reduction technologies and circular economy initiatives.

Global security issues also featured prominently during the discussions. Modi and Støre reviewed the wars in Ukraine and West Asia and discussed the impact of geopolitical tensions on energy prices, maritime trade routes and economic stability.

During joint remarks, Modi stressed the importance of diplomacy and international cooperation in resolving conflicts. “India and Norway, both, believe in a rules-based order, dialogue, and diplomacy. We agree that no issue can be resolved through military conflict alone,” he said.

The Prime Minister also referred to the Pahalgam terror attack that had earlier forced him to postpone his Norway visit and thanked Oslo for supporting India during that difficult period. Diplomats described the statement as an important signal of growing political trust and strategic cooperation between the two countries.

The Indian delegation accompanying Modi included External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, underlining the strategic significance New Delhi has attached to the visit.

India-Nordic Summit Gains Strategic Importance

A major focus of Modi’s Oslo visit is the third India-Nordic Summit, which will bring together leaders from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. The summit has emerged as an increasingly important platform for strategic dialogue between India and Nordic countries amid changing geopolitical and economic realities.

Nordic nations are globally recognised for leadership in sustainability, digital governance, innovation and clean technology. India is seeking closer cooperation with the region in areas such as artificial intelligence, smart infrastructure, climate transition, green manufacturing and resilient supply chains.

Officials said summit discussions are expected to focus on Arctic cooperation, digital public infrastructure, fintech collaboration, advanced manufacturing technologies and sustainable industrial development.

The summit also reflects Europe’s growing interest in India as a strategic economic and geopolitical partner. Analysts believe Nordic countries view India as both a major investment destination and an important long-term market for technology and industrial cooperation.

Støre described the India-Nordic framework as increasingly important at a time of global uncertainty. “The Nordic countries and India share strong interests in sustainable growth, innovation and maintaining an open and rules-based international system,” he said.

Business and Technology Cooperation Expands

Apart from political discussions, Modi and Støre are also expected to jointly address the India-Norway Business Summit in Oslo. The event will focus on strengthening investment partnerships and research collaboration between companies and institutions from both countries.

Technology cooperation is expected to become one of the strongest pillars of future India-Norway relations. India is actively seeking foreign investment in artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, clean technology and digital infrastructure as it attempts to modernise its industrial and manufacturing sectors.

Norwegian firms are increasingly looking at India as a high-growth market for renewable energy projects, maritime logistics and sustainable industrial development. Indian companies are also exploring opportunities in Nordic innovation ecosystems and advanced research sectors.

Officials said stronger collaboration in shipping, ocean management, green industrial technology and climate innovation could become defining areas of future cooperation between India and Norway.

The visit also follows the implementation of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which is expected to significantly increase investment flows and economic engagement between India and European economies including Norway.

Indian Diaspora Welcomes Modi in Oslo

Members of the Indian diaspora gathered in large numbers in Oslo to welcome Modi during his arrival in Norway. Supporters waved Indian flags and organised cultural performances including Bharatanatyam and Odissi dances during the reception ceremony.

Modi interacted with members of the Indian community, including students and professionals working across technology, healthcare, engineering and academic sectors in Nordic countries. Diaspora outreach has become a major feature of Modi’s foreign visits and is increasingly viewed as an important element of India’s global soft power strategy.

The Indian community in Northern Europe has expanded steadily over the past decade, particularly in sectors linked to information technology, renewable energy research and healthcare services. Officials believe stronger people-to-people ties will continue playing an important role in strengthening long-term strategic cooperation between India and Nordic nations.

As Modi prepares to attend the India-Nordic Summit in Oslo, the visit is being viewed as part of India’s broader strategy to deepen ties with Europe at a time when global trade relationships, energy partnerships and geopolitical alliances are undergoing major transformation.
